Our Mermaid Dress Manufacturing Experience
We have been developing and manufacturing dresses since 2007 as a China-based clothing manufacturer.
Our production system includes in-house pattern development, sampling, cutting, sewing, finishing and QC. The factory has 750+ workers, 500+ sewing machines, 5 automatic cutting lines and a 5,000㎡ production facility.
For a mermaid dress, keeping pattern development and production connected is useful because small changes to the hip, flare or seam position can affect the whole silhouette.
We work from tech packs, sketches, reference photos, existing garments and physical samples.
For a new fashion brand, you can start with one style, review the first sample and make the necessary fit changes before using the approved sample for bulk production.
Our Mermaid Dress Manufacturing Capabilities
A mermaid dress involves more than the flare itself. During sampling, we also look at the fitted section, hip ease, flare position, fabric recovery, lining and hem.
A small change to the flare can alter the balance of the skirt. Stretch fabric can also change the fit compared with a woven fabric using the same measurements.
- Sample development: 3–7 days for standard styles
- Bulk production: usually 25–30 days after sample approval
- MOQ: usually 50–100 pcs per style/color
- Pattern making: handled in-house
- Fabric sourcing: available
- OEM & ODM: supported
- Private label: supported
- Production follow-up: from sample through bulk production
Lead time is affected by fabric availability, construction, order quantity and the number of styles being produced together.

Custom Mermaid Dress Manufacturing & Customization Options
The sketch is only the starting point for a mermaid dress. Fit through the waist and hip, the point where the skirt begins to flare, and the behavior of the fabric all affect the finished silhouette.
We can work from a tech pack, sketch, reference photo, existing garment or early design idea. Our pattern and sample teams use that information to develop the construction before bulk production.
Pattern development, sampling, cutting, sewing, finishing, QC and packing are handled within our production setup. As a China-based dress manufacturer, we can keep these stages connected from the first sample through PP approval and bulk production.

Fabric Options for Custom Mermaid Dresses
Some buyers arrive with a fixed fabric specification; others ask us to source suitable options.
Useful fabric information includes composition, weight, stretch, hand feel, color, season and target price.
| Fabric | Common Mermaid Dress Applications |
|---|---|
| Satin | Evening, formal and occasion styles |
| Crepe | Fitted and clean silhouettes |
| Chiffon | Lightweight and layered designs |
| Lace | Occasion and decorative styles |
| Velvet | Fall, winter and evening collections |
| Mesh | Sheer panels and layered designs |
| Jersey | Stretch fitted silhouettes |
| Sequin Fabric | Party and evening collections |
A fabric that looks right in a reference image may not work for the required quantity, construction or target price.
If the first fabric option does not fit the target cost or construction, we can review other available materials before the final sample is approved.
Popular Mermaid Dress Styles We Manufacture
Mermaid is a silhouette rather than a single construction. The length, neckline, sleeves, fabric and lower flare can all be changed while keeping the fitted upper shape.
Catalogue from Xiuyu Apparel

Satin Mermaid Dress
Satin makes fit and seam quality easy to see because the surface reflects light. The fabric weight, lining and stretch level can affect how closely the dress follows the body.
During sampling, we check the waist and hip fit, seam appearance and the way the lower skirt falls after pressing.

Lace Mermaid Dress
Lace brings additional questions around lining, stretch, motif placement and edge finishing.
If your lace has a large floral repeat or scalloped border, the pattern layout needs to be considered before cutting. Otherwise, the front and back can look unbalanced or fabric consumption can increase.

Chiffon Mermaid Dress
Chiffon gives the lower skirt a softer movement, but it also behaves differently from a structured fabric.
Layering, lining, seam finishing and the amount of flare need to be checked together. For sheer designs, the chiffon and lining are reviewed during sample approval.

Velvet Mermaid Dress
Velvet has a directional nap and usually carries more weight than chiffon or lightweight satin.
The nap direction needs to be consistent when the pattern is laid out. We also check pressing and seam appearance because excessive handling can affect the surface.

Sequin Mermaid Dress
Sequin fabrics require more care around cutting, seams and lining.
If the sequins are dense, some seams may need different handling, and the lining can add bulk. It is better to check these points during the first sample, before bulk cutting begins.

Mermaid Mini Dress
With a short mermaid dress, there is less skirt length for the flare to develop. The flare position therefore has a bigger effect on the overall proportion and walking comfort.

Mermaid Midi Dress
Midi styles give more room between the hip and hem to develop the flare. For these styles, the knee area and hem width need to work together rather than being set independently.

Mermaid Maxi Dress
With a long mermaid dress, fabric weight and hem balance become more noticeable, especially with heavy satin, velvet or embellished fabrics.

What You Can Send for Mermaid Dress Development
You do not need a finished technical package before contacting the factory.
You can send:
- Tech pack
- Design sketch
- Product photo
- Reference garment
- Fabric swatch
- Measurement chart
- Existing sample
- Size requirements
- Color references
- Estimated order quantity
A reference photo is enough to start a discussion. If you want to change the neckline, fabric, length or back design, include those changes with the reference.
Before sampling, the production team can review the construction, fabric requirements, measurements and finishing details that need to be confirmed.
Why Mermaid Dress Fit Needs More Attention
A mermaid dress can look correct on a flat product photo and still need several adjustments during fitting.
The main areas we check are:
- Hip fit: The fitted section needs enough room for the intended size range without losing the close silhouette.
- Flare position: Moving the flare higher or lower changes the proportion of the entire dress.
- Fabric recovery: Stretch fabrics can fit differently after wear or pressing. Recovery needs to be considered when setting the pattern allowance.
- Hem balance: A wide lower flare can hang differently depending on fabric weight, lining and construction.
Movement:A very fitted skirt may look good standing still but become restrictive when walking. The approved sample should be checked in movement as well as on a mannequin.
These are the points that our pattern and sample teams look at before a mermaid dress moves into bulk production.

Why Work With Xiuyu Apparel for Mermaid Dress Production?
Xiuyu Apparel has been producing dresses for fashion brands and other buyers since 2007.
We work with fashion startups, designers, fashion brands, boutiques, retailers, wholesalers and private label companies.
For mermaid dresses, our in-house pattern and sampling teams can work through fit and construction changes before the approved sample moves into bulk production.
The factory has 750+ workers, 500+ sewing machines, 5 automatic cutting lines and a 5,000㎡ production facility.
How We Develop Your Mermaid Dress Sample
1. Review Your Design
We first review the available information: measurements, fabric, lining, closure, construction details and any reference sample.
If anything important is missing, we confirm it before pattern development starts.
2. Pattern Development
Our pattern team develops the first pattern according to the approved measurements and construction.
For a mermaid style, the pattern team pays particular attention to the flare position and the transition from the fitted section.
3. First Sample
The sample is used to check:
- Bust
- Waist
- Hip
- Dress length
- Flare position
- Hem width
- Neckline
- Armhole
- Lining
- Closure
- Overall movement
4. Fit Revision
If the hip is too tight, the flare starts too low, the waist is misplaced or the hem does not fall evenly, the pattern can be revised.
This is where a reference photo alone is not enough. The sample gives the pattern team something physical to measure and adjust.
5. PP Sample Approval
Once the fit, fabric, measurements and construction are approved, the PP sample becomes the production reference.
Any remaining fit or construction changes should be completed before bulk cutting begins.
6. Bulk Production
Approved fabric moves through inspection, pre-shrinking where required, automatic cutting, sewing, in-line QC, pressing, final inspection and packing.
The bulk order follows the approved sample and production specifications.

What Affects the Cost of a Mermaid Dress?
Factory quotations for mermaid dresses can vary considerably because the construction, fabric consumption and finishing work are not always the same.
Fabric Consumption
A wide flare or long train can use much more fabric than a simple fitted skirt.
Pattern and Sewing
Curved panels, multiple seams, ruching, draping and structured sections add development and sewing operations.
Lining
Full lining increases material use and sewing time, especially when the dress has a fitted upper section.
Embellishment
Beading, appliqué, embroidery and sequins can add substantial handling and labor.
Fabric Characteristics
Two fabrics with similar compositions may still have different widths, stretch, recovery and cutting behavior.
Order Quantity
Larger orders can improve production efficiency, but fabric MOQ and the number of colors still affect the calculation.
If you have a target price, send it together with your design and expected quantity. It gives the factory a useful reference when reviewing where production costs are coming from.
Inside Our Mermaid Dress Manufacturing Factory
The following shows the main production stages inside our factory.

Fabric Warehouse
Fabric rolls are recorded and organized before production. This is particularly useful when one mermaid dress is produced in several colors or needs repeat orders.
↓

Fabric Inspection
Our QC team checks fabric condition, color, width and visible defects before cutting.
For satin, silk and other fabrics with visible surface problems, early inspection can prevent material issues from reaching the finished garment.
↓

Fabric Pre-shrinking
Where required, fabric is pre-shrunk or stabilized before cutting to help control dimensional changes.
↓

Automatic Cutting
Approved patterns are sent to the computerized cutting system. Pattern pieces are checked against the approved marker before bulk cutting.
↓

Bulk Production Sewing
Cut panels are assembled according to the approved sample.
For fitted mermaid styles, key areas such as side seams, waist seams, zippers and skirt panels receive particular attention during sewing.
↓

In-line Inspection
QC checks measurements and construction at key production stages. Any issues can then be corrected before the order moves further through production.
↓

In-line Pressing
Garments are pressed during production where required to control shape and remove wrinkles.
↓

Final Pressing
Finished garments receive final pressing before inspection.
↓

Final Inspection
Finished dresses are checked against the approved sample and production specifications, including measurements, stitching, appearance, labels and trims.
↓

Garment Packing
Approved garments are folded and packed according to your requirements. Labels, barcodes, polybags and carton information are checked before shipment.
↓

Finished Products
Finished garments are checked by style, color and size. Carton quantities, labels and packing details are verified before loading.
↓

Container Loading
After packing, our warehouse team loads the cartons into containers according to the shipping plan. Carton arrangement and stacking are checked during loading to keep the cartons stable during transport.

Cutting Room & Fabric warehouse
As a custom dress manufacturer, we handle the main production steps in-house, from pattern making and sampling through cutting, sewing, finishing, and final inspection. Our team works from your tech pack, sample, sketch, or reference and checks the details before the style moves into bulk production.
Keeping these stages with one production team makes it easier to deal with pattern changes, sample revisions, and construction issues before cutting starts. We can also arrange screen printing and custom embroidery when these details are part of the design.

More Mermaid Dress Styles Available For OEM & ODM Production

One Shoulder Mermaid Dress
One shoulder styles need extra attention around the neckline and armhole because the garment weight is not distributed evenly on both sides.

Mermaid Wedding Dress
Wedding mermaid styles may include lace, tulle, appliqué, beading, boning or a longer train. These details affect pattern development, fabric consumption and sewing time, so they need to be included in the sample review.

Mermaid Evening Dress
Clean crepe and satin designs are common for evening collections, but lace, velvet and sequins are also used. The fabric choice changes how the fitted section and lower flare behave.

Mermaid Prom Dress
Prom mermaid dresses often combine a close body fit with a stronger flare, slit, open back, train or embellishment. Each added detail affects the pattern, lining and production time.

Off Shoulder Mermaid Dress
With an off shoulder mermaid dress, the neckline needs to stay in place without restricting movement. Elastic, internal support and sleeve attachment all affect the fit.

Strapless Mermaid Dress
A strapless mermaid dress needs enough internal support to keep the neckline in place. Boning, elastic, stay tape and bust fit all affect the final sample.

Halter Mermaid Dress
The halter neckline changes the balance around the neck and upper chest. Strap width, neckline position and bust support are checked during fitting.

Ruched Mermaid Dress
Ruching changes the amount of fabric used in a section and can alter the apparent fit.
For a fitted mermaid style, too much gathering around the waist or hip can make the garment tighter than the measurement chart suggests. We check the gathering tension during sample development.

Our MOQ usually starts from 50–100 pieces per style/color. The final quantity can still depend on fabric availability, color requirements and construction. If you are launching a new collection, it is useful to confirm the fabric and color plan first so the order quantity matches the actual production setup.
Yes. You can send a product photo even if you do not have a complete tech pack. Tell us which parts you want to keep and which parts need to change. We can then look at the silhouette, measurements, fabric and construction before deciding what needs to be developed for the first sample.
The flare position is controlled through the pattern rather than simply adding fabric to the lower skirt. During fitting, the waist, hip, upper skirt and flare are checked together. If the transition does not match your intended silhouette, the pattern can be adjusted before the production version is approved.
It depends on the silhouette you are trying to achieve. Stretch satin can work well when you want a close fit, while crepe or heavier satin can give a different fall. For lace, chiffon or velvet, lining and fabric weight become more important. We review these factors together instead of selecting fabric from appearance alone.
Yes. A train can be added to the pattern and developed with the rest of the skirt. You should provide the desired train length and reference if you have one. A longer train increases fabric consumption and can also affect cutting, hem finishing and packing, so it is better to include it from the first sample.
Yes, but these details need to be considered during development. Lace may require specific placement and cutting, while sequins or beading can affect garment weight and sewing. If you have a reference for the placement, send it with the design. This helps the sample reflect the intended production version more closely.
Bulk production is usually around 25–30 days after sample approval and fabric confirmation. The schedule can change when the style involves special fabrics, custom dyeing, heavy embellishment, multiple colors or additional revisions. Once the approved sample and main materials are confirmed, the production schedule can be planned more accurately.
Yes. You can give us the fabric composition, weight, stretch, color or hand feel you need. If you do not have a supplier, we can review available fabrics according to the design and target price. For repeat orders, fabric availability and consistency should also be checked before final approval.
